A file is associated to an application by its file extension. For example, if you double-click a file in Explore and the file extension has been associated with an application, the file will automatically open in that application.
.doc is associated with Microsoft Word
.xls is associated with Microsoft Excel
.ppt is associated with Microsoft Power Point
